Target, National Federation for Blind settle suit

Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Sam Black Staff Writer

Target Corp. and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) have settled a class action lawsuit related to how accessible Target’s Web site is for blind customers.

Minneapolis-based Target (NYSE: TGT) agreed to establish a $6 million fund from which some California customers can make claims, according to a joint press release from Target and the NFB, a Baltimore-based advocacy group with about 50,000 members.

Target also agreed to work with the NFB over the next three years to enhance the experience of blind visitors to Target’s web site.

The suit claimed that Target’s site violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. At the time the suit was filed in 2006, Target’s site required certain screen-reading software and wasn’t accessible to all blind online users.
