Forbes names Minneapolis to ‘best cities to earn a living in’ list

Minneapolis has fared well in a new list of best U.S. cities to earn a living in, compiled by Forbes magazine’s Web site.
At the top of the list was Houston, which was praised for its dynamic business environment, low unemployment and high wages relative to income, the online arm of the business magazine said.
Minneapolis took second place, with the organization noting the headquarters of top companies like Target Corp., Travelers Insurance, Pepsi Americas, St. Jude Medical, U.S. Bancorp and Cargill Inc. located there. Rounding out the top five were Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York.
The study looked at the country’s 40 largest census-defined metros and gauged the quality of the business environment by how many of the Forbes’ 400 best big companies and 200 best small companies were headquartered there. It also looked at each metro’s median incomes, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, compared them to cost of living, and factored in job-growth forecasts from Moody’s Economy.com.
