Nonpaying patients leave hospitals ailing

Area hospitals are feeling the pain of nonpaying patients. Dr. Beau Watts (left) and Dr. Heather Isom work at Truman Medical Center, whose hospital system has provided about $44.5 million in unpaid care since July 1, up from $37.4 million in the same period last year.

AthletixNation markets sports footage to media

Local tech startup AthletixNation Inc. signed a deal Dec. 19 to license sports video content from the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division 1 schools to integrate the videos into media outlets' Web sites. The deal could double the company's valuation.

HOK designs continued growth

HOK Sport Venue Event, bought by 10 principals from St. Louis-based HOK Group Inc. in 2008, ended the year with the contract to design a $500 million multipurpose venue for Birmingham, Ala. Senior Principal Dennis Wellner says he expects the firm to have billings of at least $154 million in 2009.
