City announces green jobs program

The city of Boston will provide funding to train some 30 workers in energy efficiency facilities maintenance as its first “green collar” jobs program.
The Asian American Civic Association will use a $125,00 grant to run a facilities maintenance energy efficiency training program to support the city’s new green building requirements. Graduates of the program will be able to enter positions with facility owners and managers, including program partners CJ/CMJ Management Company, Cornu Management Company, Maloney Properties, Winn Residential, The Lenox Hotel, and the Hilton Back Bay Hotel.
“Today we are beginning the greening of the city’s job portfolio,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino at a ceremony in the boiler room of The Lenox Hotel. “I want to make sure Bostonians have the right training and skills so our region will be at the forefront of green jobs.”
This summer, Menino announced the foundation of a green jobs program, requesting proposals from various agencies for programs. The city is providing $250,000 in funding from its Neighborhood Jobs Trust and Boston Connects Inc. has donated $100,000 to the effort.
When asked what other types of green jobs he would like to see developed in the city, Menino said he wanted to see more solar system installers, water and sewer efficiency engineers among others.
The city plans to announce other training programs sometime in early 2009.
“We want to make Beantown greentown,” he said.
